Background of the Study

Child mortality remains a significant public health issue in Sokoto State, with high rates of preventable deaths among children under five years of age (Abubakar et al., 2023). Factors such as malnutrition, infectious diseases, lack of access to quality healthcare, and inadequate neonatal care contribute to the high mortality rates. Pediatric nurses, who play a critical role in delivering care to children, have the potential to make a significant impact on child health outcomes. Their involvement in early diagnosis, treatment, health education, and preventive care can help reduce child mortality.

In Sokoto State, where healthcare resources are limited, pediatric nurses face challenges such as insufficient training, lack of equipment, and high patient-to-nurse ratios. However, their contributions to improving pediatric care cannot be overstated. This study aims to explore the role of pediatric nurses in reducing child mortality in Sokoto State, identifying the barriers they face and the strategies they employ to improve child health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

High child mortality rates in Sokoto State are attributed to various factors, including inadequate healthcare, poor access to medical facilities, and insufficient training for healthcare providers. Pediatric nurses, despite their critical role in managing childhood illnesses, face significant challenges in delivering optimal care. This study seeks to investigate how pediatric nurses in Sokoto State contribute to reducing child mortality and the challenges they face in their role.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of pediatric nurses in managing childhood illnesses and reducing mortality in Sokoto State.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by pediatric nurses in Sokoto State in their efforts to reduce child mortality.
  3. To recommend strategies to enhance the effectiveness of pediatric nurses in reducing child mortality.

Research Questions

  1. What is the role of pediatric nurses in reducing child mortality in Sokoto State?
  2. What are the challenges faced by pediatric nurses in delivering effective care in Sokoto State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the role of pediatric nurses in reducing child mortality?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Pediatric nurses in Sokoto State play a significant role in reducing child mortality.
  2. Inadequate training and resources are the primary challenges faced by pediatric nurses in their efforts to reduce child mortality.
  3. Enhancing training programs and providing more resources will improve the effectiveness of pediatric nurses in reducing child mortality.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on pediatric nurses working in healthcare facilities in Sokoto State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and field observations. Limitations include difficulties in accessing remote healthcare facilities and potential biases in self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms
